Our Plain Language Day presentation showcased English and French projects. Nuria G. Belart, Hugo Hardy, and Myke Wilder shared their work, discussed the principles their work is based on, and demonstrated successful outcomes. Their presentations offered plain language practitioners an opportunity to learn how others plan their messages and communicate with the world.

Valérie Michaud and Caroline Hewetson, from the Bank of Canada, showed participants how to align their plain language pitch to organizational priorities and use compelling data to build a case. They demonstrated ways to connect with decision makers and suggested ways to use editing expertise, anticipate potential plain language pitfalls, and maximize return on investment.

In this webinar, environmental scientist and Plain Canada Clair member Sydney Boulton talked about why a lot of climate change communication fails and how plain language can help make it successful.

We had some great discussions at our virtual conference in January, but we also came away with more questions. In fact, there were entire subjects that we didn’t even get a chance to talk about. We felt like the conversation was unfinished, so we invited our community to continue the discussion.

Workplaces are now hives of collaboration. Documents are shared and worked on together. It seems no one person is responsible and no one person is in charge of the process. In light of how writing is often done at work, participants were asked to consider how writing is done in their workplaces and how to change those parts of the process that don’t work well.

Carol is an experienced nurse educator with a passion for person-centred health care, health literacy, health equity, and clear communication. In our first virtual event of the season, Carol described her journey to bring plain language into health care. She talked about how passion, persistence, and partnerships can pay off and improve care.
